About The Hydrous
The Hydrous is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit where marine science meets cinematic storytelling. We transform ocean science into immersive experiences that inspire communities around the world to care for our shared ocean.
Our work
Founded in 2014, The Hydrous turns ocean science into immersive experiences: VR films, AR reefs, open-access 3D coral models, synchronized group dives, and curricula. We have led 2.75 million virtual dives. Our work rests on 12 peer-reviewed papers, much of it with Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab. Our goal is to connect 10 million learners to the ocean by 2030.
Leadership
The Hydrous is led by co-founder, Chief Scientist and CEO Dr. Erika Woolsey, a marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer who earned her PhD studying coral reefs on the Great Barrier Reef. She is supported by a board of directors and a Science & Technology Advisory Council.
